เดการ์ตมีทรรศนะทางปรัชญาต่อพระเจ้าว่า
1) รับรองความมีอยู่ของตัวฉันและสสาร
2) รับรองความจริงของความรู้ที่แจ่มแจ้งและชัดเจน
3) เป็นผู้ให้การเคลื่อนแก่สสาร
4) เชื่อมความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างวิญญาณกับกาย
เพราะฉะนั้นคุณลักษณะของพระเจ้าต้องเป็น ผู้ทรงสรรพฤทธิ์(Omnipotent), ผู้ทรงสรรพัญญู (Omniscient), และผู้ทรงสรรพเมตตา (Omnibenevolent) เหมือนในปรัชญาอัสสมาจารย์
