มอนโร ( D. H. Monro. Empricism and Ethics., New York, 1967) ถือว่า ought สืบเนื่องมาจาก is นั่นคือ สิ่งที่เราคิดว่าควรทำนั่นก็เพราะเราต้องทำสิ่งนั้น ความต้องการนี่แหละคือที่มาของจริยธรรม ได้ชื่อลัทธิว่า ลัทธิบรรยายนิยม (descriptivism) กล่าวคือ จริยธรรมคือประมวลคำบรรยายความต้องการของมนุษย์
