หนังสือเล่มแรกที่บันทึกวิจารณญาณของชาวยิว ได้แก่ คัมภีร์ไบเบิลพันธสัญญาเดิม (The Old Testament) ซึ่งชาวยิวเรียกว่าคัมภีร์ตานัค (Tanak) คัมภีร์นี้แสดงให้เห็นปัญหาของชาวยิวโบราณว่า ชาติยิวซึ่งเป็นชาติเล็กในท่ามกลางมหาอำนาจจะอยู่รอดได้อย่างไร คำตอบก็คือ โดยมั่นใจในพระสัญญาของพระยาห์เวห์ โดยที่ทางฝ่ายชาวยิวเองจะต้องซื่อสัตย์ต่อพระองค์ด้วย
